The Do's and Don'ts of creating a Baby Registry

Soooo…you’re pregnant. Congrats! Whether it’s your first, or whether you’re well-versed in the art of having children, you know as well as any that adding another number to your bunch comes with quite a few changes to your normal way of doing things. Babies are a bundle of joy, but they are also expensive and require a few more bits and bobs than you might currently own. So, what do you do? Baby shower or Sprinkle! As you’re prepping for yours, here are a few dos and don’ts to keep in mind.

DON’T go in uninformed

Do your research! Think about what you really need ahead of time, and go in with a gameplan. Ask for specific items, brands, and colors. Read reviews! You’ll be the one using these things every day, so make sure you register for the things you are really excited about. This might take a bit more work on the front end, but you’ll be thanking yourself later. Need a starting place?

DON’T be afraid to ask for money

There’s no shame in that! It’s no secret that babies are expensive, so if money is tight, this is a great time to let your friends know that gifting money would be most helpful. Or, if you’re not sure what to register for, this is a great option. If you don’t want to flat out ask for money, ask friends and family to donate toward a specific fund! AKA diaper fund, childcare fund, you get the idea.

DON’T do it alone

Now’s the time to lean on your network of mom friends. Maybe your sister had a baby years before you, or your college best friend is about to have her second. Ask them about the items they can’t live without! Getting real life advice from the people around you can help you make decisions.

DO register online and in store

Babylist is our favorite way to consolidate all your items from any store in one place (PS – you can find Zoe there!). This makes it easier not only for you, but for everyone shopping for you. There’s no need to keep track of a million different registries and try to figure out who bought what. You already have enough going on.

DO include a wide price range of items

Listen – some of your friends and family will really want to spoil you during this time. Let them! We have a few ideas, if you need any inspiration (*cough cough* the Tour, the Cloud, you get the picture). Other friends may be just as excited for you, but not in a place to spend a lot of money at the time. Make sure to include a range of items to accommodate everyone celebrating you.

DO be needy

Yes, you read that right! Your registry isn’t just for your baby – it’s for you too. Consider the practical items you want to include, but don’t forget to have a little fun too! Add in some wishlist items, some essentials, and maybe a couple things you’re obsessed with, but wouldn’t necessarily buy for yourself. This is a very exciting time, so don’t be afraid to ask for what you want and really enjoy it.
