When you think of vacation, you may think of somewhere sandy and warm with a margarita in one hand and a sun hat (or another margarita?) in the other. While we’re major fans of sunny holidays and Vitamin D, changing things up with a family trip away to a winter wonderland could be just what you need. Here are five of our favorite places to escape to for a family-friendly trip, during the colder months.
1. Jackson Hole, Wyoming
If you’ve never been to Jackson Hole, consider this your sign. If you’re after winter wonderland vibes, look no further. Jackson Hole is a great place to enjoy the outdoors! Hit the slopes as a family, or take the little ones tubing at the Grand Targhee Resort or Snow King Resort if they aren’t quite ready to ski. You can even go ice skating with picturesque views at the Village Rink on the Commons in Teton Village.
2. New York City
If you’re up for the challenge, New York City can be magical in the winter. From over-the-top window displays to holiday shows, there is something for everyone to enjoy in the city. Head to Rockefeller Center to see the iconic tree all lit up, or warm up with some hot chocolate at Serendipity. You’ll never run out of things to do, or memories to make, here.
3. Aspen, Colorado
If you’ve always wanted to be “that family that skis,” now is your chance. The easy slopes at Snowmass and Buttermilk mountains are great places for beginners to learn. If skiing isn’t your thing, then take a horse-drawn carriage around quaint downtown Aspen, or visit Snowmass Luminescence – an interactive art installation complete with illuminated walkways and tunnels. It’s sure to be a trip your family won’t forget.
4. Salt Lake City, Utah
If you’re looking for the perfect mix of city and outdoor activities, then Salt Lake City is for you. Of course, you will have plenty of places to ski, tube, and the like, but there is plenty more to see! Discover fascinating facts about Olympic history at the Utah Olympic Park, or visit the Midway Ice Castles – an experience full of hundreds of thousands of icicles, LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels, slides, fountains and more.
5. Asheville, North Carolina
There’s something for everyone in Asheville. From cozy coffee shops and breweries for the adults, to a pinball machine museum and toy stores for the kids, you’ll have no shortage of things to enjoy together. Head to the Biltmore to take a walk through the beautiful gardens and brush up on your history knowledge, or take a trolley around town to see the sites in a whole new way.
